“I’m Obinim”
I had no Idea of what they were asking. The next thing I saw was a handcuff on my hands and being led away in a vehicle to the police station. I had no idea of what I had done.
I tried asking for reasons, yet they never gave me the chance. I became scared. I’m not a law breaker, just an ordinary boy who lives life as the day goes by. As broke as I am, I enjoyed the little freedom I have. The freedom that will make go around hustling for money, the freedom that will make me see and talk to any girl I like.
Now this has all changed within a short time, with no fault of mine. Even in the handcuffs, I tried reaching out my phone, just to call someone who will follow up on me; the next thing I felt was a slap that made me hear bells ringing in my ear.
What did I do wrong to deserve this? Even if I am a criminal, do I deserve this cruel attitude from someone who we know is to enforce the law?
That was when I remembered my mother who passed away when I was 15 years. It got me crying all over again. Weeping like a child. My mother always wanted to see me happy until she had cancer that ate into her system living her to die just after two months when the cancer had been discovered.
My father, mmm, I only saw his picture. Mother never spoke of him or where he is whether alive or not. I didn’t even know whether he existed or not. I lived under the care of my old uncle until I raised some money to live on my own. Even though I had no job, I was enjoying life in my own way until this day where I felt I had no help from anywhere.
I mind my own business, and as jobless as I am, I don’t go around extorting money from people. Application has become my daily diary, as almost every single day I write to different companies, institution and what have you just to get a job to earn a living but all prove futile. But you can’t take the fact that I’m always happy. That’s something I didn’t need money to buy or application to write.
On this very day, I felt my life was not worth living. In no time, we got to the station and I was led to the counter. To my surprise, I met Shela standing right at the counter with her face buried in her hand. She saw me and you could tell that she was very surprised when she saw me in handcuffs being led away.
Then the officer who was lead to my arrest asked her “Madam, we were able to arrest one of them. We shall put him behind bars once we are done interrogating him”
“What are you talking about? I know this guy, as a matter of fact I was coming from his end when the robbers made away with my handbag, I saw them with my own eyes, he is not part” Shela said.
Finally I was being redeemed, the police men stood there and felt embarrassed after Shela had made that statement. That was where I was given the chance to talk and to explain myself as a victim of circumstance.
I was released immediately as instructed by Shela. Apparently she was very powerful and influential than I thought. Her father came to the station aa soon as he heard what happened. Shela apologized together with her father and invited me to their house.
However, her father kept asking Shela of the where about of one Jojo guy who I don’t even know. From the looks on Shela’s face, you can tell she didn’t want to talk about him.
We sat in her Father’s car as he drove us to his apartment. Shela’s car however was been driven by the family driver who had initially brought Shela’s Father to the station.
“Shela, Why didn’t you tell Jojo about this, besides where are you two not in good terms or something” Shela’s Father asked.
From the back seat where I was seated, I felt refreshed in this air-conditioned car with monitors behind seat showing musical clips. The seats of the vehicle was so foamy much more better than the slim tiny mattress I sleep on. Talking of my bed, mmm that bed, had really “Yawa” me. I remember there was this one I time I had this friend Ayele. She was just a friend until we were over shadowed with lust and ended up having sex in room.
That was where I noticed that my bed could really make “Choko-Choko” sounds anytime I banged. Thank God my landlord was not around, I bet he would have defiantly heard those funny noise coming from my bed.
If this car has seats like this, then I can imagine the kind of sofa’s in Shela’s father house. All this was passing through my mind until I head Shela complaining bitterly about her husband. Apparently Shela was married to this Jojo guy. My heart just broke down, I couldn’t believe my hears. I kept asking myself how come she wasn’t wearing a ring. For a moment, I wished I was actually put behind bars than to hear that Shela was married.
